I just spent a few days in Hope, BC. It's a beautiful place, and I usually like to shoot beautiful places, but this time, I wanted to do things differently. Instead of capturing landscapes with my usual Sony kit, I decided to grab my Fujifilm X-T5, slap a 23mm prime lens on it, and try to do cinematic street photography. In this shot, I caught an abandoned gas station in midday's harsh light. I love me an abandoned gas station!
Blue sky, blue roof, white walls, white crosswalk. Simple. Light was harsh so I muted the colours, made it all look washed out.
Old church, harsh daylight, muted colours. Instead of clinical quality, I went for something less sharp, trying to make the photo look old.
Speaking of cinematic, Rambo was filmed here, and there's a wooden statue to remind everyone.
Golden hour in the park, walking among the towering trees, with the ground red with dried pine needles.
Ok, I said I wasn't there for landscapes, but come on! I had to catch that sunset on the Fraser river. Still followed the theme, though: Fuji, 23mm, wide crop.
That neon sign caught my attention, and then there was that car coming. There's just something about this shot... It could be an intro to something. Some stranger rolling into town, and then things happen.
Wallace Street, long and straight, with the mountain looming over the sleepy little town.
Dairy Queen. I don't know why this one stands out to me, but it does. Maybe I'm just proud that I got the exposure right for the sign, hand held, in low light. I'm not used to shooting at night without a tripod so this is like being a beginner again!
And finally, this: I really only exposed for the highlights, and honestly, I didn't think I could get anything more out of this shot. And yet, here it is, very dark, with very little visible. But there's just enough to see a dark street, dimly lit by that neon sign. The darkness around it is full of mystery. Perhaps danger is lurking in the shadows. Who knows?
